if you like your hip hop interesting, you need this album:

it's amazing and definitely going to be one of my albums of the year.

best lines of the album comes from doseone:

know that to know this:
not enough water in the world.
you can buy it
i'll hunt mine.

for the curious, the mixtape is the return of themselves, a hippity hop group, made up of doseone [who is so incredibly unlike any rapper you've ever heard, [info]astrovisionary, you can hear him on the peeping tom track, how u feelin?] and producer, jel. featuring on the mixtape are:

buck 65
aesop rock
 busdriver
 lionesque
 slug of atmosphere
 d-styles
 dj baku
 pedestrian
 sole
 serengeti
and yoni wolf and odd nosdam as cLOUDDEAD

one: ate a slice of processed cheese because i was so hungry for dinner.
i think it was so plastic that it shut off access to my stomach.

two: smoked wuz and myself out of the house cooking chops. and they weren't even good chops!
who knew bad chops existed?

three: exchanged some witty text message banter with bne about the damp bicarb soda on the bed.
he suggested i use my hairdryer on it.
i said: 'use your hairdryer on it! you owe me a reese's brownie'.
he trumped my sorry ass with: 'just talk to it a bit. the amount of hot air coming out should do the trick. oh snap!'

four: got HACKED by my sister. but she was using her hacking powers for good not evil.
hack away sister, hack away.

five: set up an ftp client! every nerd has a right to groan and fling themselves around in a chair right now.
i know, it's so super easy, but i haven't used one since 2001 and i'd never set one up myself before.
and it was fun! and why do i have a ftp client? because i have my very own website!
*gasp*
i know, right?
it's not ready to show anyone yet [well, anyone except those whose aethetic opinions i have asked for].
it's been super fun plaing around with.

one of these people had an upset stomach today. actually to be honest, both of them did. but only one of them only made it as far as the end of the bed. after owning a cat, i am no longer queasy about anything.

riddle me this though: bne accidentally locked her in his office today.
why could it not have happened there?

so much for an early night!

responses from various members of my family [because i contact all of them when shit, ahem, like this happens]:

dad: 'scrub the mattress, but don't soak it. then get rid of the cat *muffled laughter*'
steph: 'hehe. i have to say i had a bit of a giggle'
mary: 'little loose bowelled tramp'
and get this, this is how hardcore my mum is at mumming: before she even knew what was going on, i heard her yell 'bicarb soda!'

none of this explains why i have phil collins's sussudio stuck in my head though.

one thing i think i will regret for a long time is that i didn't buy[info]leechlike's extra amanda palmer ticket last time she was out here. i think if i saw her live now i'd still think it was an amazing show, but i think if i'd seen it with no idea who she was or what the songs would sound like or what her stage show was like, i would have had an epiphany.

***

all is not lost though, i did discover reese's brownies.
they provide you with not only the most moist, delicious, chocolate/peanut butter brownie you've ever had, but also provide you with 20% of your recommended daily intake of some kind of fat.
treat food only.

ugh, i just can not shake being sick. i avoided bne's flu for the most part, but
i have this horrible, wakes me up in the middle of the night, every night, cough.
i sound like a flock of geese.

to add insult to injury, i slammed my ipod in the car door on wednesday night.
i trod on the last one, so i am familiar with the sensation of kicking myself for my own stupidity.

rip gonzo I

rip gonzo II

helloooo gonzo III!

***

the week was not a total write off, however.

i discovered the carrotbox, the website of a total ring aficionado.
my favourite part of the site is the blog where a truly incredible collection of rings are displayed.
definitely avant-garde.
i'm a total ring junky and have looked for a site like this for ages.
i just wish i could buy them all!

***

i used to work with an american dude with purple hair.
besides being a very colourful presence in my working life, he also knew where all the awesome stuff on the net was.
this link, for example, will take you to one of the best things on the internet:
a dramatic reading of a breakup letter.
turn those speakers up!
i laughed for about eight years after i heard this.

***

my purple-haired people eater went away, but i do have another colleague now who also knows where some gems are.
we were having a really down week this week, there was a bit going on at work, we'd both been sick, and we were really, really tired.
then she discovered one sentence, a website where you post little one sentence long stories about yourself.
it's kinda like post secret and really addictive.
much like twitter, i really like seeing how people work within the confines of a small amount of words.
an example of a contributor's one sentence:

It was perfectly in character for me as a child, when I maintained to my first grade teacher that my favorite animal was not a giraffe or tiger, but grass.

***

my friend miss kate, posted this link about environmental graffiti on twitter the other day and it's so amazing!
my favourite is the moss graffiti of anna garforth:

***

lastly, i just worked out how to set up a google reader.
more precisely, i finally got around to doing setting one up.
i subscribed to a bunch of stuff, i came across a really thought-provoking blog from alec baldwin on the huffington post.
essentially baldwin questioned the 150 year sentence handed down to bernard madoff recently.

the end.

my boss: fine, leave. leave me here by myself.
me: now you know how i feel every night when you leave before me.
my boss: what? do you cry?
me: uh huh, that's why i keep a good stock of tissues at my desk.
my boss: that's a bit sad that that's all it takes to make you cry.
me: i think it's sad that your self esteem is so low that you don't think that your absence would make someone sad.
my boss: snap.

on the weekend i was telling bne that i was glad he was my boyfriend, that he doesn't care that i'm a goofy loon, or that i bring the upstairs neighbour home at 1am, drunk, to drink more. i was also telling him about how cold my feet were, icy, icy cold and in order to show him how cold they were, i kept touching him with them. then i asked him to go on a date with me this coming weekend. i hope he says yes!

then last night he was watching a nature documentary [because he is very, very old, our bne] and he said something that could change our relationship forever.

he said, and this is a direct quote: 'dolphins are shit'.

who even thinks that, let alone says it?!
there is something wrong in his cranium.

today, after a delightful brunch with our aunt at cafe giulia in chippendale,
[large fluffy almost pikelet-esque pancakes with lemon and sugar and a large tangy orange and red grapefruit juice],
[info]pyjamas_harvey and i met up with[info]stibbons at the australian centre for photography in paddington,
to see an exhibition of photos from the most recent batch of centre students.
after pete left, steph and i wandered into what turned out to be the best exhibition i've seen recently, nay, maybe ever:
pieter hugo's nollywood, a collection of photos of actors from the nigerian film industry, the films of which, according to the acp website, are:

Low budget, violent and excessive...For this series of portraits, Pieter Hugo collaborated with Nollywood actors to recreate the stereotypical scenarios that characterise their productions. His assortment of characters includes mummies, satanic demons and decomposing corpses, casually posing in the backlots of Enugu. With an eye for the absurd, he pays tribute to a unique industry that has stood up to the giants of the entertainment industry and come out on top.

the photos are very confronting, but absolutely spectacular.
i think i will go again on thursday before the exhibition closes.
i'm rarely ever caught completely unawares like that, but it was a very satisfying find.

i just saw this on smh.com.
i didn't even bother to read the article,
the text on the link alone was enough to make me yell to bne
'oh my gawd! this is SO true!'

i spend way too much time on the internet.
this needs to cease.

secondly, and more importantly:
for those not on [info]emush's friends list...
yesterday she found a kitten, starving, freezing and very lonely.
she can't keep her and will give her, free, to a good home.
she has been wormed, fed and given lots of cuddles.
this is she, a domestic long hair was is obviously exceptionally cute and apparently very smoochy.
she is probably around nine weeks old.

if you are in the market for a kitten, and as emm said, it's a 10-15 year commitment, let me know and i shall pass your details on.
as i just said to [info]mstrss_cat , "animals are just the best. i mean, i always had animals as kids, but actually being responsible for one of my very own...i love that cat like it's some sort of really hairy child"

lately the things that have been making me happy have been very usa and/or photography-centric.

bne and i have been making a concerted effort to be more positive, and one surprising side-effect of this is that both of us, independently, started listening to a lot of hip hop. it's just really hard to feel down when you're listening to hip hop! some of our favourites [and the traditional definition of hip hop gets stretched a little here] include:

+ atmosphere
+ doseone
+ p.o.s
+ why?
+ themselves
+ cLOUDEAD
+ subtle

at the moment i am especially digging atmosphere, p.o.s and doseone. atmosphere are a little more old school, both musically and lyrically, and over the course of the last six months or so, i've bought nearly every single one of their albums, which says a lot about how good they are. this clip is from their most recent album, when life gives you lemons, you paint that shit gold, and it's my favourite track, 'you':

p.o.s used to be in a punk band called om, the influence of which is really evident in his hip hop, especially this track, 'drumroll' which has amazing percussion:

doseone is absolutely amazing. both a hip hop artist and a poet, he's been in experimental hip hop bands like cLOUDEAD, themselves and subtle. he was also on peeping tom's self titled album. lately we've been listening to a lot of his stuff on a sampler from the record lable anticon. i wish i could find a decent clip of the subtle song 'midas gutz' because it's really odd and wonderful, but there appears to only be one on-line and it's not great quality. but if you can hunt down the song, do!

but music alone can not sustain you, so what else has kept me going this week?

first up, the most mind-blowing wrigley's product ever, orbit balance blueberry gum, which miss[info]tocsin brought back for us from her recent european sojourn. it is both delicious and the taste is super long-lasting!

...fühl ich mich vital indeed!

also, i have some new bling, a little something i found on etsy, then got in contact with the sellers, who happened to be from sydney [etsy really hasn't taken off here yet, i don't know why, it's amazing!] and they re-sized it for me and then i went and met them and picked it up a few weeks ago. i love it. the lock swings which is distracting in an awesome way:

and finally, photography. recently, one of my absolute favourite photographers, the amazing ryan russell, from alabama, started an etsy shop, selling his polaroids. i nearly died when i discovered this, and the fact that the first bunch had sold out, but through the power of twitter, i got to hear from the man himself when the next batch went up and i scored four. yesterday he mentioned that there were a few still for sale and one was one i had previously not been able to afford, so i messaged him and asked if he'd posted my others and if not, could he sell me the other one and ship it all together. not only had he posted my stuff already [which is so exciting, i can't wait to see them and have them framed], but he said that seeing as though i'd been 'reppin'' him, i could have the latest one without paying for postage. they're amazing, they make me feel like american beauty did.

the ryan russells will hang near my michelle ho, who, speaking of, introduced me the the wonders of steve gullick yesterday, who is also fantastic.

miss[info]neurofern tweeted recently about this incredible set of photos from this year's glastonbury festival. they are just so alive and warm. a really amazing set. if i ever took one photo as good as some of these i'd die happy.

lastly, living near the airport has its advantages sometimes, including seeing tiny specks of planes against sleepy skies:

in order to understand this story, you need to know several things:

one - every day tv channels send us files with their updated schedules. we, imaginatively, call these "dailies"
two - i am working from home today.

i completed something for my boss, and sent him an IM to tell him, and then promptly closed the conversation and forgot about it. about 15 minutes later, a box pops up, from him, that says 'oi oi oi!'

he can be a little spontaneous and odd, but i also thought it sounded urgent, so i said 'is this a random oi, or in response to my last message?'

he responded: 'oh it was a song. a song for when you completed what you just did. you know, like when the dailies come in and we all sing 'when the dailies come in, you must rip it!' to the tune of 'whip it' by devo?'

no, no i wasn't aware that we did that, but i'm kinda all for it, you know?

the epic julia vs the telco world came to a close today, with the following email from a person at the internet provider, who, i have to say, was really helpful in this process:

Hi Julia

I will organise the $220 be refunded within the next 5-6 business days.

Our wholesale supplier says the service was re-jumpered at your MDF, meaning it was ''removed'' likely by Telstra Retail technicians (as the service was working prior) ie: in place.

As to why the Telstra Wholesale technician didn't re-jumper it when he was onsite the other day either is yet another example of Telstra being uncompetitive.

Little you/we can do about that, nor could you/we prove they did it (but it's obvious). Just the downsides of the monopoly Telstra Retail technicians inconveniencing all other competitors.

p.s. Under current law they are supposed to make a note the actual jumpers they look at or remove (in investigating anything of MDF's even if the service is not a Telstra Retail service) and touch, but they don't. And the TIO, federal government do little to investigate these federally mandated breaches by Telstra.

Regards,
XXXX,  Manager - Compliance

essentially what seems to have happened was the a storm, the sunday before last, knocked out the phone of my friend upstairs and when telstra came to fix his phone, they yanked ours.

it's really frustrating to think that one stupid mistake, a whole lot of red tape and the incompetency of the first technician who came to check on our problem means i'm currently about $300 out of pocket, but it's nice to know it's all going to be returned and that i now know the power of the ombudsman and have a link to a manager in the compliance department.

you really don't know how much you need the internet and phone until it's gone, and in that spirit, please enjoy some talking cats and dogs:

when i was watching this to make sure it was the one i wanted bne started laughing from another room, because until about 12 months ago, i didn't use youtube, because i didn't know, okay? i didn't know about all the fantastic stuff you could watch on it. then bne showed me talking cats and dogs and i got addicted.

anyway, the first cat is one of my favourites and bne just watched in and said 'what do you think the cat is really doing? cats don't care for courtesy!'

a few weekends ago we went to mittagong for the opening of my uncle brian's exhibition at the sturt gallery, which was a raging success on all fronts. on the way back, bne and i made a little detour to a small town called thirlmere, which is where the bne spent his formative years, before moving to orange when he was 12. it's actually the second time we've been back in recent years and it's pretty fun to see where little bne grew up.

thirlmere is known for a few things: the town and its surrounding areas were used for the filming of mad max 2 and it has a huge rail museum.

we've decided it might be a nice idea to go back to a few other places we lived in during our respective childhoods and see what we can remember and find now.

a couple of months ago i was perusing Q magazine, which i generally like because they have really funny captions for their photos, though it does tend to be incredibly uk-centric. there was a short q&a with katy perry, in which she really pushed her edgy side, by talking about her partying and by using the word 'fuck' a few times. she had some really insightful things to say too, about the controversy surrounding her first big hit 'i kissed a girl', and her subsequent fame:

i thought about her last statement a lot and i have to agree. over the years, there really haven't been any pop stars willing to push the message that fake lesbianism causes controversy and thus masses of media coverage.
nope, not a single instance springs to mind.

and while i was at it, i tried to think of any examples of recent day pop stars who have used overt sexuality at all in any way, shape or form to generate publicity. once again, i drew a total blank.

katy perry, try as i may, i have been unable to prove you wrong.
here i was thinking you'd just reinvented the wheel, but no katy perry, you are the wheel.
